A Q&A With Chef Robbie Wood

Led by the talented Chef Robbie Wood, SuperFd is a sports nutrition catering company focused on high-quality, sustainable ingredients. They are caterers for the LA Kings and other professional sports franchises, and focus on creating meals that provide complete nutrition for everyday performance – whether you’re a pro athlete or just looking to eat like one.

We caught up with Chef Robbie to talk about what goes into creating performance-based meals, how SuperFD supports local farmers, and what’s next in his career.

When creating meals for the LA Kings and other franchises, what considerations go into each recipe/menu planning to ensure peak performance?

When building out the menus for professional sports teams we consult with the team Dietitian and look at the schedule to see if there are any holidays or special events. We make sure on a weekly basis that the teams get the fuel they need, but also that they enjoy a variety of cuisines, flavors and textures. Celebrating birthdays and holidays with special meals helps break up the routine and the players feel the personal touch.

How can your performance-based meals support the day-to-day nutrition habits of those just looking for a healthy lifestyle?

I think the pace of life for the average American has sped up immensely over the last 20 years. The integration of technology in our lives has taken away focus from the kitchen and limited some people’s ability to prepare fresh food as often as we used to. SuperFd meals bring convenience and health together to meet the demanding schedules of today with quality food that people can believe in.

Many of your meals contain a fun addition, like kimchi mustard or sumac pesto. What makes these stand apart from traditional sauces like ketchup?

We look at sauces as an opportunity. People love to sauce up their food and it makes things pop. So, we add layers to the sauce that create a more rounded nutrition profile and improved palate – like the Kimchi Mustard packs a great punch of pre- and probiotics!

How does SuperFD support local farmers and sustainable agriculture?

SuperFd works as directly with farmers, ranchers and fishers as possible to ensure that the quality of our product is topflight while our impact on the environment is considerate. Featuring seasonal produce and market specific menu offerings allows us to rotate throughout the year to keep the menu ideas fresh as well.

Which meal of yours would you recommend to someone who’s never tried your food?
I love our Smoked Brisket with Charred Tomato BBQ Sauce or for a little lighter offering the Coconut Jerk Chicken with Rice and Black Beans is full of flavor with amazing overall macros.

Why did you want to partner with Mealogic/how has Mealogic helped you and your business?

We have been feeding professional athletes for over a decade and Mealogic allows us to bring that same quality directly to people at home. We had heard from the fans of the teams we feed that they wanted to be able to get SuperFd for their active family and Mealogic helped us make that happen. The management of the platform, the customer service, and delivery takes a burden off our team and enables us to focus on what we are best at – cooking delicious and nutritious food!

Also, Chef Robbie, we hear you’ve been working on a new project around Food As Medicine. Is there anything you’d like to share about your journey and this new endeavor?

My work with athletes over the years inspired me to dive deeper into the ingredients and learn about the nutrition side of things. I found an amazing program offered through the University of Montana Medical School called Culinary Medicine. So far I have earned the Level 1 Certification, and I continue to learn about how to properly deploy food as medicine.
